Comparing PCR, Rapid, and Antibody Tests

PCR and rapid tests detect a current infection of COVID-19 in your body.
PCR and rapid tests use a nasal/throat swab to collect a sample, which is then processed to determine the presence of the virus.

Antibody tests check your immune system to see if you’ve had COVID-19 before.
Antibody tests take a blood sample and check for antibodies in your blood, which your immune system produces to fight off viruses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Booking an Appointment and Getting Tested

How are the tests administered?
PCR and Rapid Test
The test we use is a nasal swab test. One of our trained medical professionals will use the swab to get a sample of nasal secretions to send to the lab. This is done by inserting the swab into your nostril approximately 1 inch into the nasal passage (mid-way).

Antibody Test
The antibody test is administered by taking a blood sample. A nurse will prick your finger with a tiny needle and collect a droplet, which is all that’s needed.

All tests take approximately 10 minutes and can be conducted while you remain in your car.

How far in advance can I schedule an appointment?

You can book an appointment up to 2 weeks in advance and up to 1 hour before your desired appointment time. Please be aware that tests booked within 24 hours of their start time are nonrefundable.

Can I pay for my test with insurance?

We charge your credit card at the time you make your appointment.

Please note that we do not bill any insurances directly. Some health insurance plans will reimburse you for these services if you submit a claim after the test is administered. We recommend that you reach out to your health insurance carrier to understand the reimbursement requirements prior to the test if applicable.

Can I book multiple appointments for my family or coworkers?
Yes, call the testing location nearest to you and let them know you want to book multiple appointments.
Can I cancel my appointment?

You can cancel up to 24 hours before your appointment time to get a full refund of your test fee. If you need to cancel within 24 hours, we cannot refund you, but we can reschedule your test for another date.

What do I need to do to prepare for my appointment?

Please do not eat anything one hour before your testing appointment. Some people can experience brief nausea during a swab/nasal test, so it’s safer on an empty stomach.

Bring a form of personal identification to your test. This helps ensure that your test results are matched to the right person.

About the Test and Test Results

How does a PCR test work?
PCR tests look for genetic material called RNA that instructs the virus to make these proteins. This is different from a rapid antigen test, which look for proteins on the surface of the virus to detect the virus.

A PCR test requires a throat or nasal swab as a sample. The sample is sent to a lab where it is heated and cooled using special reagents to convert the virus’s RNA into DNA, and then make millions of copies of the DNA, which allows for the identification of the organism.

This process can take hours and requires specialized lab equipment and trained technicians. However, the process is thorough and means that results are nearly 100% accurate at determining whether someone has been infected.

How does a rapid test work?

A rapid test requires a throat or nasal swab as a sample. A technician mixes the sample with a solution that causes certain viral proteins to break off and move freely.

The mixture is applied to a paper strip that contains an antibody designed to bind to these proteins. If the proteins are present, the result shows up as a colored band, much like a home pregnancy test. This is known as a lateral flow assay test.

How does an antibody test work?
Antibody tests detect antibodies to the COVID-19 virus to determine if it’s likely that you have had the virus before. The test works by taking a blood sample and checking for the presence of antibodies to see if you have developed an immune response to the virus.

If you’ve been vaccinated recently, an antibody test can tell you if the vaccination was effective.

Antibody tests differ from virus tests like rapid and PCR tests, which check if you currently have the virus. An antibody test cannot test if you currently have the virus.

Are your tests certified by the FDA?

PCR Test
Yes. Our samples are processed by a lab using the the EZ™-SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time RT-PCR, a real-time RT-PCR test intended for the qualitative detection of RNA from the SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, and nasal swab specimens. The EZ™-SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time RT-PCR has received an emergency use authorization (EUA) from the FDA.

Rapid Test
Yes. We use the Access Bio, Inc. CareStart™ COVID-19 ANTIGEN test, which has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA).

Antibody Test
Yes. We use Ecotest COVID-19 IgG/IgM Rapid Test Devices, the first ever FDA EUA authorized CLIA waived finger stick whole blood IGM/IGG combination antibody test.

For more information, see the FDA report here.

Can a PCR or rapid test be used to return to work?

Yes, either a PCR or rapid test for infection will allow BrightStar Care to provide clearance for COVID-19. Your employer will determine return-to-work protocols.

Can a PCR or rapid test be used for travel or surgery requirements?
In nearly all cases, a PCR test is sufficient. It is the gold standard for accuracy in detecting COVID-19. A rapid test can be used to travel to some countries, but it is less widely accepted.

For surgery, a PCR will likely be required.

We recommend checking with your specific destination or performing hospital first to be sure.

Will an antibody test tell me if I'm immune to COVID-19 or if I've had COVID-19 before?

An antibody test cannot tell you with complete certainty:

* if you had COVID-19 in the past
* if you’re immune to coronavirus
* if you can or cannot spread the virus to other people

What an antibody test does tell you:

* whether you’ve been exposed to COVID-19 in the past
* whether you’re less likely to get sick from COVID-19 if you do catch it
* whether your recent vaccination was effective in producing antibodies

How long will it take to get results?
Rapid Test and Antibody Tests
Your test result will be available in approximately 15 minutes. However, at particularly busy times, results may take up to an hour to appear in the client portal. If they take more than an hour, call us.

PCR Tests
PCR samples need to be sent to a lab to be processed. Your test result will be available once the processing is complete. Generally, appointments before 11am EST will have results the same evening, while appointments after 11am EST will have results in 1 business day.
